1,764. Sending a Get Within Israel

Hilchos Geirushin 7:1

Let’s say that an agent brings a get from one place to another within Israel. Even if he didn’t see the get being written and he doesn’t know who the witnesses are, the get just being given to him by the husband with instructions to deliver it, he can give it to the woman in front of witnesses. Even though we don’t know who the witnesses that signed are, divorce is effected and the woman may remarry.

Hilchos Geirushin 7:2

If the husband came and claimed that he never divorced her and the get is a forgery, the signatures on the get must be verified. If this can’t be done and no one knows who the witnesses are, she must leave the second husband and any children from that marriage are illegitimate because she wasn’t divorced. If the get was lost, then the divorce is in doubt. For this reason, women who are assumed to resent one another are not trusted to deliver each other’s get in Israel. This is out of concern that it might be a forgery because one wants the other to remarry and become prohibited to her husband.
