#425: Doing Dishes

1. We mentioned yesterday that Chazal forbade washing dishes on Shabbat if one does not plan to use them any more on Shabbat due to hachanah, preparing on Shabbat for after Shabbat. If one simply does not like the appearance of dirty dishes piled in the sink, many poskim also permit washing dishes, even if they will not be used until after Shabbat. This is because it is considered a Shabbat need for such a person (Shulchan Shlomo 323:3; Dor Hamelaktim, vol.4, p.3047, citing R. Ephraim Greenblatt).

2. Although only one or two cases are mentioned in the classic halachic sources for hachanah, contemporary poskim write that any activity performed on Shabbat with no benefit whatsoever for Shabbat itself, but only for after Shabbat, is forbidden (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 28:77). We will offer more examples of this tomorrow. In addition, we should note that preparing on Shabbat for Yom Tov that falls on Motzai Shabbat is also forbidden, although we will not discuss this subject in depth here.
