#424: Halachot of Hachanah: Introduction

1. Chazal prohibited washing dishes and preparing the beds on Shabbat if one does not plan to use them any more on Shabbat. This prohibition is known in halacha as hachanah, preparing on Shabbat for after Shabbat.

2. If dirty dishes will cause an unpleasant smell, attract unwanted insects, or the like, one may wash dishes on Shabbat in a permitted manner (such as without a sponge or without a special Shabbat sponge so squeezing is not a concern). This is considered a Shabbat need and not treated as hachanah for after Shabbat (see Tzitz Eliezer 14:37 concerning washing dishes in a hospital and Chazon Ovadia, vol. 6, Hadachat Kelim 1).
