#426: Cleaning Up

1. We mentioned yesterday that any activity performed on Shabbat with no benefit whatsoever for Shabbat, but only for after Shabbat, is forbidden due to hachanah. For this reason, many say that one should not clean up the table after Seudah Shlishit before Shabbat is over due to hachanah unless one needs the table before that time (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 28:87). Similarly, one may not clean up a room that will definitely not be used again until after Shabbat due to the prohibition of hachanah. However, if leaving a mess until after Shabbat may cause other problems (e.g., may attract flies), it is permitted.

2. It is permitted to place dirty dishes into the dishwasher on Shabbat and rinse them lightly to remove excessive residue. Although this prepares them for being washed after Shabbat, if this is the normal manner in which they are cleaned, or if one simply prefers that they not be left out, placing them there does not constitute hachanah (R. Yosef Zvi Rimon, Sulamot website; see also Peninei Halacha, Shabbat 22:15).
