4,147. Three Places of Burning

Hilchos Maasei Hakarbanos 7:3

Offerings were burned in three places. The first was in the courtyard. Offerings burned there include offerings (of the highest sanctity) if disqualified, the organs and fats of offerings of lesser sanctity if disqualified, the bulls and goats that are burned if disqualified – whether before or after the blood was sprinkled. Examples include if they were rendered ritually unclean, if they were brought outside the courtyard prematurely, or if their flesh or fats were left overnight.

Hilchos Maasei Hakarbanos 7:4

The second place was a place on the Temple Mount called the birah. Offerings burned there include sin offerings that must be burned because they were disqualified after leaving the courtyard. The third place is a place outside Jerusalem, called the beis hadeshen (“the ash house”). Offerings burned there include sin offerings that are burned when burned according to their mitzvah (i.e., not disqualified).
