4,148. Offerings That Must Be Burned

Hilchos Maasei Hakarbanos 7:5

All offerings that must be burned may be burned by a non-kohein, and they may be burned at night. Any type of wood may be used for burning offerings that must be burned outside of the courtyard, even straw and stubble, as per Leviticus 4:12: “On wood with fire” – any type of fire. So why mention wood at all? This was done to exclude such things as lime (calcium oxide) and hot embers.

Hilchos Maasei Hakarbanos 7:6

A sin offering of birds is brought as follows: melikah (nipping the head) was performed on the southwest corner of the altar, as was previously discussed. The kohein descends with his thumbnail until he cuts the requisite organs (the esophagus and the windpipe) or the greater part of one of them. He doesn’t separate the bird’s head from its body; doing so invalidates the offering and renders one subject to the penalty of lashes, as per Leviticus 5:8: “He shall nip its head from the back of its neck but not separate it.” He sprinkles the bird’s blood on the wall of the altar, below the dividing line. The rest of the blood is squeezed onto the base of the altar, as verse 5:9 continues: “He shall squeeze the rest of the blood onto the base of the altar.” From the fact that when one puts the blood on the altar wall the rest is squeezed onto the base, we see that the wall referred to means the lower wall.
