#320: Thick and Loose Mixtures
1. There are a few different types of mixtures that are relevant to losh. The Torah melachah of losh applies to a “belilah avah” (thick mixture). This is defined as a mixture that does not flow, or flows very slowly when poured. This includes dough, egg salad, baby cereal, and the like. Thus, one may not mix the liquid and solid ingredients of these foods together on Shabbat on a Torah level (Shabbat 156a; Chazon Ish 58:9).
2. A “belilah rakah” (loose mixture) is included in losh on a rabbinic level. This is defined as a mixture that is one mass, but still flows when poured from one bowl to another. It includes applesauce, baby cereal in a loose batter, cake batter, and the like. Accordingly, one may not mix liquid and solid together to form any of these items either. We will see in later posts that there may be more room for leniencies with this type of mixture.
