#319: Thinning and Distinct Items
1. We learned yesterday that both steps of kneading, pouring water into flour, and kneading the water and flour and water together, are forbidden on Shabbat. However, pouring additional liquid into an already formed mixture to make it thinner is not included in losh and is permitted. Therefore, mixing a little oil into peanut butter or other semi-solids is permitted (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 8:7).
2. Losh also does not include preparing a mixture that contains distinct pieces of solid. Therefore, adding liquid to pieces of salad or lettuce is permitted since they do not usually coalesce together into one unit (Mishnah Berurah 321:68). Similarly, tuna salad consisting of chunks of tuna made with mayonnaise is also not a problem of losh (the details of this case will be discussed in future posts).
