#315: Mashing With a Shinui
1. One may perform tochen with a significant shinui (change in the normal method) if it is for immediate use. However, the rules for what constitutes a shinui are complex and should not necessarily be relied upon practically in many cases (though see below).
2. Poskim agree that a shinui may be used in the following specific case: One may use the back of a spoon or knife to mash a banana or other fruit if it is for immediate use (Chazon Ish, Igrot Moshe). Some also allow using the prongs of a fork to mash (Ohr Ltzion), while many others do not allow this (Orchot Shabbat).
