#314: Mashing Foods
1. Some poskim hold that one may not mash foods such as fruit on Shabbat due to the melachah of tochen (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah). Others hold that one may do so for immediate use (like the category of “miyad”), but only in cases of need (Igrot Moshe). A third opinion holds that one may mash foods for immediate use in all situations (Rav Ovadia Yosef).
2. Some hold that all would agree that mashing a banana is not considered tochen since it remains one entity, while tochen generally involves crushing or cutting something into multiple pieces (Igrot Moshe).
