#316: Mashing a Cooked Fruit or Vegetable

1. We learned earlier this week that poskim disagree whether one may mash a raw fruit or vegetable normally on Shabbat. Nevertheless, poskim agree that it is permitted to crush a well-cooked fruit or vegetable, since the cooking already renders it equivalent to being crushed (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 6:10).

2. For this reason, it is permitted to smash a soft, well-cooked potato in the cholent with a fork. Likewise, one may spread jelly on a piece of bread even if the jelly contains pieces of fruit, as long as they are soft (Orchot Shabbat 5:9-10).
