3,990. Kareis for Intentional Entry
Hilchos Bias HaMikdash 3:11
We know that a ritually unclean person only violates the prohibition for entering the Temple, but he is exempt from punishment if he touches the courtyard from the outside, from Leviticus 12:4. Regarding a woman who gave birth, it says, “She may not enter the Sanctuary” (so specifically entering is prohibited).
Hilchos Bias HaMikdash 3:12
If a ritually unclean person enters the Temple intentionally, he is subject to the penalty of kareis (spiritual excision), as per Leviticus 17:16: “If he doesn’t launder (his clothes) and wash his flesh, he will bear his sin.” If he enters unintentionally, he must bring a variable guilt offering, as per Leviticus 5:2: “Or a soul that touches any unclean thing.” One is subject to kareis or a guilt offering only for entering the Israelite courtyard and beyond, or an extension of the courtyard that was sanctified with complete sanctity, as will be addressed IY”H in chapter 6.
