The members of the maamad were prohibited to have their hair cut or to wash their clothes the whole week, but they were allowed to on Thursday in honor of Shabbos. The reason they were prohibited to have their hair cut and wash their clothes was so they wouldn’t enter their maamad in a disheveled state. In this way, they would have to get a haircut and wash their clothes in advance.
