3,906. Duplicating the Temple Incense
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 2:9
If someone makes incense using the same eleven spices as the Temple incense and in the same proportions in order to smell it, he is subject to the penalty of kareis (spiritual excision) for making it intentionally, even if he never ended up smelling it. If he made it unwittingly, he must bring a sin offering. Even if he didn’t make the full size of 368 maneh, but only one half or one third of that, he is subject to kareis for making it in the proportions of the Temple incense. This is as per Exodus 30:37-38: “You may not make incense for yourselves according to its recipe. One who makes incense like this in order to smell it will be cut off from his people.”
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 2:10
If one made such incense for educational purposes or to give to the community, he is exempt [though doing so is still prohibited]. One who smelled the incense but didn’t make it is not subject to kareis, but he is subject to the rules of one who benefits from consecrated property. The Torah only imposes the penalty of kareis when one made incense according to this recipe in order to smell it.
