3,772. A Regular Layperson vs. Someone Who Is Suspected

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 8:13

Similar to the case in the previous halacha are species that are not obligated in tithes – the Rambam gives several examples, including very strong garlic and onions, and Egyptian lentils – and seeds that are not eaten, like those of turnips and radishes. All of these may be purchased from anyone during shemittah.

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 8:14

The preceding halacha applies to a regular layperson. However, if someone is suspected of doing business with shemittah produce, or of guarding and selling such produce, then one may not buy anything shemittah-related from him. One may not buy flax from him – not even combed flax – but one may buy flax that was spun and twisted.
