2,954. Calculating the Value of a Body Part
Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 2:3
If someone commits the value of his hand, or of someone else’s hand, his value is calculated with the hand and without it. He then pays the difference to the Temple treasury. For example, let’s say that his value if sold whole would be 50 zuz. His value if sold without a hand – meaning that he would get to keep his hand for himself and the buyer would have no share in it – is calculated as 40 zuz. In such a case, he pays ten zuz to the Temple treasury. The same is true in all comparable cases.
Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 2:4
If someone commits the actual value (as opposed to the valuation) of his head or of his liver, or the actual value of someone else’s head or liver, he must pay the person's entire value. Similarly, if one commits the value of half of himself, he must pay his whole value. However, if he commits half of his value, then he need only pay half his value.
