2,942. How Much Is a Valuation?
Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 1:2
It is a positive mitzvah to judge the judgments of valuations as per the Torah. Whether one commits to pay his own valuation, the valuation of his companion or the valuation of some third party, he must pay the valuation based on that person’s age. Such a valuation is a set amount specified by the Torah, which cannot be increased or decreased.
Hilchos Arachin Vacharamin 1:3
Valuations are as follows: a person 30 days old or younger has no valuation. If someone commits the valuation of such a person, it’s like committing the valuation of a utensil. This generates no obligation. If someone is from 30 days old through the end of their fifth year, the valuation is five shekel for a boy and three shekel for a girl. From the start of the sixth year through the end of the twentieth year, the valuation of a male is 20 shekel and that of a female is 10 shekel. From the start of the twenty-first year until the end of the sixtieth year, the valuation of a man is 50 shekel and that of a woman is 30 shekel. From the start of one’s sixty-first year until death, however long a person lives, the valuation of a man is 15 shekel and that of a woman is 10 shekel.
