2,607. Henhouses and Pigeon Coops

Hilchos Shechita 13:8

Sending the mother bird away only applies to kosher birds that are not kept, like doves that rested in a loft or wild birds that made nests in an orchard, as per Deuteronomy 22:6, “When you happen upon….” When a bird is kept, like ducks, chickens and doves that nest in a coop, then one need not send the mother away.

Hilchos Shechita 13:9

If chicks can fly and no longer require their mother, or if the mother is sitting on unfertilized eggs, then one need not send the mother away. If the chicks are treifos, it’s the same as unfertilized eggs and one need not send the mother away.
