2,577. A Bird That Got Knocked Into the Water

Hilchos Shechita 9:15

Let’s say that a bird’s wings got stuck with glue while it was being captured and then it was struck. If only one wing was stuck, we are unconcerned that it might have been rendered treif; if both wings were stuck and it was struck, then we are concerned.

Hilchos Shechita 9:16

Let’s say that a bird is knocked against water. If it swam against the current for the distance of its full height, we are unconcerned that it might have been rendered treif; if it swims with the current, then we are concerned because the water just might be carrying it. If the bird heads towards straw or hay that’s floating on the river, then it’s clearly swimming on its own and we are unconcerned.
