2,230. "The Child’s Status Follows the Father"

Hilchos Issurei Biah 19:15

Kohanim, Leviim and Yisroelim are permitted to marry one another and the children’s status is determined by the father. Leviim, Yisroelim and chalalim are likewise permitted to marry one another and the children’s status is determined by the father. All this is as per Numbers 1:18, “They established the lineage of their families according to their father’s household." We see that the family is based on the father’s household and not the mother’s.

Hilchos Issurei Biah 19:16

Leviim, Yisroelim, chalalim, converts and freed servants are permitted to marry one another. If a convert or a freed servant marries a girl of Levite or Israelite descent, or a chalalah, the offspring is a Yisroel. If a Yisroel, a Levi or a chalal marries a female convert or a freed servant woman, the child’s status is determined by the father.
