#433: Control Over the Animal's Movements

1. We learned yesterday that one may not trap a bird inside a house due to the rabbinic prohibition of tzad. However, if the person has absolutely no control, even minimal, over the living creature’s movements, closing the window or door would be permitted even lechatchilah (Chut Shani 1:15:2).

2. For this reason, if a fly or other small insect enters the house, it is permitted to close the door or window. Since it is so small and can essentially fly wherever it wishes within the house without the person catching it, one has no control of any sort over it.
