#412: Walking

1. Although we have learned that exercise on Shabbat is forbidden for various reasons, many poskim hold that walking is always permitted on Shabbat, even when done for the purpose of exercise, though some disagree (Mishnah Berurah 301:7). One may take a leisurely walk even in the hot sun, despite the possibility that this may cause one to perspire, provided that it is not one’s intent.

2. Walking briskly is permitted according to all opinions, at least when done for the purpose of reaching a destination quickly (Peninei Halacha 22:8). However, doing so for the purpose of exercise or maintaining fitness is subject to the dispute in #1 and should preferably be avoided (Piskei Teshuvot 301:4). Light stretching, however, is permitted (Peninei Halacha 22:8).
