#411: Jumping Rope
1. We mentioned last time that children who enjoy playing games involving jumping or running may do so, since this is their enjoyment on Shabbat. According to some poskim, children should nevertheless not jump rope on Shabbat, since this may be similar to dancing, which is forbidden, due to the concern that one may come to fix a musical instrument (R. Chaim Kanievsky, cited in Dor Hamelaktim, vol.2, p.1137).
2. Others permit jumping rope on Shabbat and do not consider it to be similar to dancing (Yalkut Yosef, O.C. 301; Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 16:40). In addition, some poskim permit dancing on Shabbat and are not concerned that people today would fix a musical instrument (Rema, O.C. 339:3). Perhaps they would permit jumping rope as well.
