4,135. Limbs That Are Thrown Off the Altar

Hilchos Maasei Hakarbanos 6:2

The wool on the heads of sheep, the hair of the beards of goats and the animals’ bones, sinews, horns and hoofs are all burned on the altar when they’re still connected to the animal. This is as per Leviticus 1:9: “all of it.” If these things have been separated, they’re not brought on the altar, as per Deuteronomy 12:27: “You shall make your burnt offerings – the flesh and the blood.” If any of these things are flung from the altar, they are not returned to it. Similarly, if coals are flung from the altar, they are not returned.

Hilchos Maasei Hakarbanos 6:3

Regarding limbs that are flung from the altar, if they have substance, they are returned to the altar even if they came off after midnight. This is because Leviticus 6:2 says “on its fire, on the altar, all night long.” If such limbs don’t have substance, they are not returned even if they came off before midnight. If the flesh on the limbs has been scorched so that it’s dry like wood and they came off the altar before midnight, they are returned; if after midnight, they are not returned.
