4,134. The Hides of Consecrated Offerings

Hilchos Maasei Hakarbanos 5:21

If someone consecrates a burnt offering for Temple upkeep, or if one consecrates property that includes male animals that should be brought as burnt offerings, the hides are not given to the kohanim. This is because Leviticus 7:8 specifies “the burnt offering of a person,” which excludes burnt offerings that belong to the Temple. Rather, the hides are sold and the proceeds used for Temple upkeep. The hide of a burnt offering brought by a man, a woman, a non-Jew or a servant is given to the kohanim. The verse says “ish” (literally, a man) only to exclude offerings belonging to the Temple.

Hilchos Maasei Hakarbanos 6:1

There is a Torah obligation to bring burnt offerings according to the procedures outlined in the Torah, as follows: the animal is slaughtered and its blood thrown as was described in the previous chapter. It is then skinned and cut into pieces, which are all burned on the altar. This is as per Leviticus 1:9: “The kohein shall burn it all on the altar.”
