#386: Unnecessary Melachah
1. Over the last two weeks, we have discussed some of the rules concerning when one is allowed to violate Shabbat for pikuach nefesh. With regard to which activities may be performed for a person whose life is in danger, the halacha is that only those necessary to save the person’s life may be performed. Other activities that are helpful, but not necessary or even somewhat effective in curing or treating the person, may not be performed (Mishnah Berurah 328:14), though a non-Jew may be asked to do so instead.
2. Any activity that will help a person whose life is in danger to increase his strength is included in the activities permitted for pikuach nefesh. The same is true if withholding it could cause him to become weaker (Biur Halachah 328:4). Therefore, one may extinguish a candle (or turn off a light) to help a patient sleep to regain strength (Shulchan Aruch 278:1).
