#325: Mixing a Belilah Rakkah
1. We discussed the proper shinui to use for pouring ingredients in regard to losh (changing the order). When it comes to the kneading/stirring step, both Ashkenazi and Sephardic poskim disagree as to whether this is necessary for thin mixtures (belilah rakkah). Some rule that a shinui in the pouring suffices (Shulchan Aruch 321:14; Chazon Ish 58; Chazon Ovadia, Shabbat, vol. 4), while others write that one should employ a shinui in both the pouring as well as in the stirring (Mishnah Berurah 321:57; Ben Ish Chai, Second Year, Mishpatim). Thick mixtures are more strict and will be discussed tomorrow.
2. One may choose from any of the following options of a shinui for stirring a thin mixture, according to those who require it:
- Mixing with one’s bare hand directly, as opposed to using a utensil (Rema 321:16).
- Crisscross strokes (shti v’eirev) (Shulchan Aruch 324:3). Instead of stirring in a circle, one stirs in the form of an X, ideally taking the fork or spoon out of the mixture each time (Chazon Ish and others).
- Mixing with the handle of a spoon or fork, or by using either the handle or blade of a knife (Igrot Moshe, O.C. 4:74, Losh 6; “The Shabbos Kitchen,” p. 153).
