#324: Changing the Order

1. Although performing a melachah on Shabbat in an unusual manner (shinui) is usually still forbidden, the melachah of losh is an exception to the rule and is sometimes permitted with certain types of a shinui. Over the next series of posts, we will discuss which shinuim may be used for each step of losh and then discuss practically what to do for each of the different types of mixtures.

2. We have mentioned previously that the first step of losh is putting the ingredients together that will form the mixture, such as pouring water into flour. The shinui to use for this is to change the normal order in which the ingredients are poured. For example, if most people make baby cereal by putting the solid ingredient into the bowl first and then pouring in the liquid (water or milk), one should pour in the liquid first and then pour in the solid on Shabbat. If there is no common practice, then one puts the solid into the bowl first and then all of the liquid, which is considered the shinui in this case (Mishnah Berurah 321:57). If one uses a thick binder, like mayonnaise, then one does not need a shinui for the pouring since nothing happens until the actual mixing (The Shabbos Kitchen, p.145 and 151).
