#322: Solid Pieces
1. We have discussed previously three types of mixtures with respect to losh – two are normally forbidden (thick mixture and thin mixture), and one is permitted (very liquidy mixture). There is also a fourth type of mixture, one that contains solid chunks or pieces. As mentioned in a previous post, this type is also permitted since it is not considered one unified whole, but rather different parts.
2. Accordingly, one may prepare tuna salad consisting of mayonnaise and chunks of tuna on Shabbat, but mashing is more problematic. Similarly, one may prepare a mixture of fruits or vegetables together with oil or vinegar, provided the pieces are not small enough that they are joined together in the process (Orchot Shabbat 6:29). In the next two weeks, we will discuss making tuna salad in more detail, as well as further scenarios, and how one can prepare mixtures in a permitted manner on Shabbat.
