#306: Filtering Liquids - Water Pitchers and Filters

1. One of the melachot related to borer is “meraked,” straining. This melacha prohibits straining liquids with waste particles in it using a strainer. According to the Shulchan Aruch (319:10, in the first opinion, which is the more accepted one), one may strain totally clear liquids (or liquids drunk by most people) even with a strainer.

2. According to this, one may use a water filter attached to the tap or a Brita pitcher if most people would drink the regular tap water if needed (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchata 3:60) [to be continued tomorrow] .
