#305: Other Cases of Borer - Soaking Fruits and Vegetables

1. The Shulchan Aruch (319:8) and Mishna Berura write that soaking fruits or vegetables on Shabbat is forbidden because one removes the small waste particles that are attached to the outside of the food (“waste” from “food”). Therefore this is forbidden even when done right before the meal. (Pri Megadim)

2. However, washing (or rinsing) dirt or other waste off of a fruit or vegetable is permitted before eating, similar to the fact that washing dishes and removing residue stuck on to the dish is not considered an act of borer (Igrot Moshe Orach Chaim 1:125, who offers three reasons for why it is permitted).
