3,951. Turning Clothes Into Wicks
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 8:5
If one of the kohanic garments gets dirty, it’s not bleached or laundered. Rather, it’s left to be turned into wicks and the kohanim wear new ones. When the Kohein Gadol’s uniform gets worn out, it’s stored away. The white garments that the Kohein Gadol wears on Yom Kippur are never worn a second time; they are stored away in the place where he removes them, as per Leviticus 16:23: “He shall leave them there.” It is prohibited to derive benefit from these garments.
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 8:6
Wicks were made from the worn-out breeches and sashes of regular kohanim. These wicks were used to light the lamps in the Temple for the celebration of the water libation on Succos. The worn-out tunics of regular kohanim were used to make wicks for the Menorah, which was always lit.
