3,949. The Bigdei Kehunah
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 8:1
There are three types of kohanic garments: the garments of an ordinary kohein, the golden garments of the Kohein Gadol and his white garments. A regular kohein has four garments: the tunic, breeches, a sash and a hat. All of these are made from white linen with six-ply thread. Only the sash had wool embroidery.
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 8:2
“Golden garments” refers to garments of the Kohein Gadol, of which there were eight: the four of a regular kohein, plus the robe, the ephod, the breastplate and the tzitz (the plate worn on the forehead). The Kohein Gadol’s sash was embroidered and was made in a way similar to that of a regular kohein. Similarly, the turban that is mentioned regarding Aharon (i.e., the Kohein Gadol) corresponds to the hat mentioned regarding his sons (i.e., regular kohanim). The difference is that the Kohein Gadol’s turban is wrapped around, while the hats of regular kohanim are worn like regular hats.
