3,940. The Officials in Charge of the Gates and the Watchmen
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 7:3
The official in charge of locking the gates would give the order at which the gates would be closed and opened. The ones who sounded the trumpets each day when the gates were opened would only do so when he told them to. Trumpets were sounded three times when the gates were opened each day – tekiah, teruah, tekiah.
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 7:4
The official in charge of the watchmen is the “man of the Temple Mount” we mentioned earlier (in Hilchos Beis HaBechirah chapter 8), who would walk around supervising the Leviim who guarded the Temple overnight. If any of them was found asleep on duty, the man of the Temple Mount would strike him with his staff and set fire to his clothes.
