3,935. The Prayer Services of the Maamados
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 6:4
On every day of their designated week, the members of the maamad davened four times: Shacharis, Mincha, Ne’ilah and an additional service between Shacharis and Mincha that was unique to the maamados. The kohanim “duchened” three times: in Shacharis, in the additional service and in Ne’ilah. Three men would read from the Torah twice each day: in Shacharis and in the special extra service. They did not read the Torah at Mincha; rather, they recited by heart like people do when reciting Shema. They didn’t gather for Mincha on Friday because they needed to prepare for Shabbos.
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 6:5
This gathering for the four prayer services and standing together to pray, petition, beseech and read the Torah is what’s called a maamad.
