#275: Differentiation from Borer
1. Before discussing the practical applications of zoreh, it is important to note that this melachah is very similar to the melachah of borer (separating/selecting). Both are defined as separating items or foods that one desires from ones that are undesired. The difference is mainly in terms of the method of how it is done. Zoreh is accomplished with the help of the wind, while borer is performed by hand (Ran to Shabbat 73a; Shevitat HaShabbat, Zoreh; see also Eglei Tal, Zoreh, for other explanations).
2. We mentioned yesterday that zoreh includes any manner of separating or removing undesired matter from a food or substance using the wind. This includes creating artificial wind as well, such as blowing at a mixture to separate the different components (R. Chananel, Shabbat 74a; Rambam, Shabbat 8:11).To sign up for the daily halacha via WhatsApp or email, click here.
