3,908. The Duties of a Levi
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 2:13
When the Leviim carry the Aron on their shoulders, they carry it face to face, with their backs pointing out and their faces pointing in. They must make sure that the poles of the Aron aren’t removed from its rings. A person who removes one of the poles from the rings is subject to the penalty of lashes, as per Exodus 25:15: “The poles must remain in the rings of the Aron; they may not be removed from it.”
Hilchos Klei HaMikdash 3:1
The descendants of Levi were all separated for the Temple service, as per Deuteronomy 10:8: “At that time, Hashem separated the tribe of Levi.” There is a Torah obligation for the Leviim to be available and ready for the Temple service, whether or not they so desire, as per Numbers 18:23: “The Levi shall perform the service of the Ohel Moed.” If a Levi accepts upon himself all the obligations of a Levi except one, he is not accepted until he accepts them all.
