#225: Outdoor Sports and Games (Part 2)
1. We learned yesterday that many poskim permit playing ball on a tiled or concrete surface, even outdoors, though some disagree. All poskim permit playing ball or marbles on a table or other surface elevated from the ground. Accordingly, playing ping-pong on a table would be permitted (though some recommend refraining for other reasons related to weekday activities, which will be discussed at a later date) (see The 39 Melochos, p. 259; Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchata 16:6).
2. All agree that one may play with items that are not rolled, even on the ground or a dirt floor outside, such as jacks or cards. Since they are not rolled, no concern exists that one may come to smooth out the surface (The 39 Melochos, p. 259).
