3,888. Where Kohanim Stood Guard
Hilchos Beis HaBechirah 8:4
Here’s how the mitzvah of guarding the Temple was performed: kohanim stood guard on the inside and Leviim stood guard on the outside. Twenty-four groups of guards kept watch all night, every night, in twenty-four locations – the kohanim in three of these and the Leviim in twenty-one.
Hilchos Beis HaBechirah 8:5
The kohanim stood guard in the Avtinas chamber, the spark chamber and the hearth chamber, the former two of which were two-level buildings on the sides of the courtyard gates. Young kohanim stood watch there. The hearth chamber was a large building with a domed roof, lined with stone ledges. The elder kohanim of the day’s duty roster slept there, holding the keys to the courtyard.
