The Kohein courtyard is holier than the Israelite courtyard. A Yisroel may only enter the Kohein coutyard when necessary for laying hands, confessing, slaughtering or waving his offering.

The space between the entry hall and the altar is holier still. Kohanim with disqualifying blemishes, who have grown their hair long or whose garments are ripped may not enter there.
