#203: Watering Plants (Part 4)
1. One may not turn on a sprinkler system on Shabbat, but one may turn it on before Shabbat and leave it on (Shemirat Shabbat K'hilchatah 26:8). Some poskim also permit setting a timer that causes it to turn on automatically on Shabbat (Ibid.). Others recommend not using a timer due to concerns of zilzul Shabbat (degrading the holiness of Shabbat) (The Shabbos Home, p. 243, citing R. Moshe Feinstein).
2. It is permitted to pour water onto pavement or concrete, even if the water may then flow onto a surface with vegetation. This is because it does not land directly on the vegetation when it is poured (see Shemirat Shabbat K’hilchatah 26:7; Yalkut Yosef 336:9).
