#202: Watering Plants (Part 3)

1. We learned previously that one should not pour water outside onto areas with vegetation. The same is true about pouring other liquids as well, though poskim disagree whether stronger liquids, such as wine, are included within the prohibition (see Mishnah Berurah 336:29 and Biur Halachah to 336:3; Orchot Shabbat 18:8).

2. One should not pour water onto any surface that is going to be plowed, even if nothing is growing there right now (Shaar Hatziun 336:18). However, most outside areas with just dirt do not qualify (see also Chatam Sofer, Orach Chaim 336). In addition, if the ground is already saturated with water (such as after a rainstorm), pouring water is permitted according to many poskim (Kaf Hachaim 336:29; Minchat Shlomo 1:91).
