3,755. Until When Shemittah Produce May Be Eaten
Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 7:1
We may only eat shemittah produce so long as that particular species is found in the field, as per Leviticus 25:7: “It (the produce) shall be for food for the domesticated and wild animals in your land.” We see that as long as an animal can eat this type of produce in the field, one may eat what he has gathered in his house. If this type of produce is no longer in the field for animals to eat, one must remove that type of produce from his house. This is the removal of Sabbatical-year produce (which is referred to as “biyur”).
Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 7:2
Accordingly, if someone has dried figs in his home, he may eat them as long as there are figs on the trees in the field. Once there are no more figs in the field, he may no longer eat the figs he has at home. Rather, he must remove them.
