3,751. Transferring Shemittah Sanctity

Shemittah sanctity may only be transferred through a sale. This applies to the original produce; when it comes to produce received for that produce, its sanctity can be transferred through a sale or by actively transferring it to other food.

Hilchos Shemittah v’Yoveil 6:9

If one has produce that was received for shemittah produce, he may not transfer the sanctity to a living animal or bird. This is out of concern that it might be left alive and someone will come to raise a herd of animals with shemittah sanctity. It should go without saying that this is certainly the case when it comes to actual shemittah produce. However, one may transfer sanctity from the produce to slaughtered animals.
