1,188. Loans Made During Shemittah

180:13 The sabbatical year only cancels financial debts at the end. Therefore, if one person lends another money during the sabbatical year, he can collect this debt for the whole of the year. When the sun sets on the eve of Rosh Hashana, then the debt is canceled.

180:14 If a borrower came to repay a debt after the sabbatical year was over and the lender said to him, "I already canceled the debt and you no longer owe me anything," if the borrower replies, "Nevertheless, I want you to take it," then the lender is permitted to accept the money from him. The borrower shouldn't say, "I am repaying my debt to you." Rather, he should say, "This is mine and I give it to you as a gift." The lender should try to get the borrower to call it a gift; if he can't accomplish this, he should not accept the money.
