#112: Lechem Mishneh (Part 4)

  1. Both Ashkenazic and Sephardic poskim disagree as to whether one may use frozen rolls or challah for lechem mishneh. Some say it is entirely permitted, since it will eventually be edible after defrosting on its own (e.g., Ohr L’tzion 2:21). Others say it is permitted only if it will defrost and be edible during the meal (Shemirat Shabbat Khilchatah ch. 55, n. 39, citing R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach)
  2. A third opinion is that frozen rolls/challah can never be used if it is not edible at the time of Hamotzi (Shevet Halevi 6:31). A fourth, middle-ground opinion, is that one may use a frozen challah for the second loaf since it will eventually be edible. However, it is preferable to use one that is not frozen (Yalkut Yosef 274; https://halachayomit.co.il/he/default.aspx?HalachaID=670). It should be noted that some rolls or challot are at least partially edible even when frozen and perhaps may still be used according to all opinions.
