#103: Timing of the Shabbat Day Meal (Part 1)
- The Shulchan Aruch (288:1) rules based on the Talmud Yerushalmi that one may not fast on Shabbat past the end of the sixth halachic hour of the day, which is the time of chatzot (halachic midday). This is because not eating past that time is considered to be afflicting oneself, which is not allowed on Shabbat. The Rema writes that this applies even if one is in the middle of davening or learning Torah.
- In light of this halacha, one who plans to begin lunch after chatzot should make sure to recite Kiddush before chatzot. As noted in the previous post, during this time of year, chatzot is often before 12 p.m., and one should make sure to plan one’s schedule on Shabbat to comply with this halacha (which will be discussed further tomorrow).
