#102: Requirement of Three Meals on Shabbat (Part 2)

  1. We mentioned in the previous post that the first meal is eaten at night, the second in the morning, and the third in the afternoon. If one was unable to eat the first meal at night, such as if one was sick with a stomach virus, one may make it up by having an additional meal in the daytime (similar to the halacha discussed previously that one who did not recite Kiddush on Friday night should recite it instead on Shabbat day, except for the first paragraph).
  2. Concerning the daytime meal, some write that it should be eaten (or at least begun) before chatzot (halachic midday) (Aruch Hashulchan 288:2; Ohr L’tzion 2:21). Chatzot in the wintertime can be as early as 11:40 am in parts of the U.S. (and 11:20 am in Israel), so according to this opinion, one would need to begin Shabbat lunch by that time. However, others maintain that it may begin after chatzot as well (Pri Megadim; Mishnah Berurah 288:1). This is the generally accepted practice.
