3,394. Completing the Labors of Grain and Wine

Hilchos Maaser 3:13

Grain must be tithed once it has been smoothed. Smoothing is when one neatens the outside of a grain pile with a pitchfork at the end, as one does when finishing his work. If he doesn’t smooth it, the grain becomes obligated in tithes once he makes the pile. Legumes must be tithed once they have been sifted, then removed from under the sifter for eating. If he doesn’t sift them, they must be tithed once they have been smoothed. Even though they have been smoothed, one may take and eat from the scattered stalks, the stalks on the sides and the kernels in the straw.

Hilchos Maaser 3:14

Wine must be tithed once it has placed in a barrel and the skins and seeds skimmed from the top. If the wine is still in the vat and he takes some to put in a barrel, he may drink a snack from it. Similarly, one may take wine from the upper vat, from the pipes or from anywhere else and drink some.
