Erchin 3:5-4:1

Erchin (Arachin) 3:5

A man who slanders his wife’s reputation can have both lenient and stringent ramifications as follows: whether he slanders a woman from the most prestigious family of kohanim or the most humble family in Israel, his fine is 100 sela. We see that one who sins verbally pays more than one who sinned through an action. Similarly, we see that judgment was only sealed against our ancestors in the wilderness because of slander (i.e., the slanderous report of the ten spies) as per Number 14:22, “They have tested Me these ten times and have not heeded My voice.”

Erchin (Arachin) 4:1

Ability to pay (in Leviticus 27:8) refers to the one who takes a vow; years are based on the one about whom the vow is made. Valuations are based on the one being evaluated and his valuation at the time of the commitment. Ability to pay is based on the one who vows as follows: if a needy person dedicates the valuation of a wealthy person, he pays the valuation of a needy person; if a wealthy person dedicates the valuation of a needy person, he pays the valuation of a wealthy person.
